History: | Originally, the butte was called 'Stiles Hill' for William Stiles, who lived near the base. He was the father of the Tombstone renegade Billy Stiles. In 1877, Charles Debrille Poston (1825-1902), named the feature Primrose Hill. It was also called 'Parsee Hill' because Poston was impressed with the sun worship of the Parsees of Egypt and developed the butte for his own resting place. Thus, the name Poston Butte with all of its variants came into use. Charles Poston, considered to be the Father of Arizona because he convinced President Abraham Lincoln to confer territorial status to it, was buried on the butte in 1925 (AZ-T101). |
